Chapter 8
Moments
Before we get into the ECW moments that fans saw in the ring and on camera, I want to take a minute to clarify one thatâs taken on a life of its own. It happens to be the title of this book.
In the years following ECWâs closure, the phrase âTod is Godâ has become part of wrestling folklore. It was chanted by fans in the ECW Arena whenever I did something in the ring to assert my authority. It got to the point where Iâd hear it anytime I came out to ringside for any reason. It then became a complimentary chant whenever something cool would happen in the ring in my absence, similar to the âE-C-W! E-C-W!â chant. Even today, fans write it on my Facebook wall all the time. However, the origin of that phrase has been the subject of some debate thanks to a few shoot interview appearances by ECW workers.
In two separate YouShoot appearances, both Sandman and New Jack recount having first heard the phrase during a licentious night in a Travelodge hotel room after a show. (Note: Sandman, licentious means lewd. Note: Fonzie, lewd means obscene.) There are elements of both truth and fiction in their recollections of the nightâs events. Firstly, itâs been reported that a submissiveâa woman in her thirties who desired being dominated, sometimes in group fashionâwas present in Scorpioâs and my room for a night of fun. That part is true. Hack and New Jack also recalled Scorpio making the woman yell âTod is God!â rather loudly as she was being dominated. True also. Iâm sure it did echo through the hallways and maybe a couple of the boys heard it, but thatâs where their versions part with the truth and become fantasy.
Hack was never in the room with us. He says he was snorting bumps of blow at a table just âbeing entertainedâ by Scorpio and the submissiveâs show. Mind you, Sandman recounts this while sitting on the floor of the YouShoot set after having gotten down there to illustrate Scorpio whipping the girl with his freakish appendage and is unable to get back up into the interview chair. Saying Hackâs recall is challenged would be putting it mildly.
New Jackâs story was embellished even more interestingly. He claims he was let into the room while Scorpio was going at it with the sub as me and Fonzie were sitting on opposite ends of the room getting our rocks off watching the action. He said she was yelling âTod is God!â thinking it was me laying pipe, and only when New Jack grabbed a lamp and held it over her did she see it was Scorpio. In reality, New Jack wasnât there holding a lamp and Fonzie wasnât there whacking off. These are two very entertaining accounts, but neither are true, and that shouldâve been evident when Jack said she needed a lamp to know the difference between me and Scorpio being inside her.
As for the clever phrase itself, Scorpio didnât invent that on the spot, nor can I credit the submissive for coming up with it.
